Welcome!
Wass-Bánffy (Rákóczi-Bánffy) castle from Gilău
Castle
In the 14-hectare castle park, which also encompasses the former Roman castrum, numerous centuries-old trees have survived, and excavations have successfully documented several historical periods of the garden.
History
One of the last medieval Catholic bishops in Transylvania, John Statileo (1528–1542), constructed the castle in the 1530s-1540s, in the immediate vicinity of the ruins of the largest Roman fortress in the former Dacia province.
The property was used as a school for disabled children until 2002. In this period, conservation work was carried out, albeit not to the necessary extent.
However, during the ten-year legal claim initiated by the heir in 2002, the property remained unoccupied, and its condition deteriorated significantly, especially due to rainwater seeping in various places.
